When you learn a language, you cannot learn to speak it just by looking at a vocabulary book and memorizing words.

You have to actually use the words, listen to the pronunciation of the natives, and say them out loud yourself to gradually learn to speak the language.

In the same way, you will not be able to use sign language just by learning the words.
As with any other language, the best way is to learn from native signers.

Please refer to the following pages for more information about learning sign language.

The general content of sign language is explained in "Sign language is the language of the deaf".
Please refer to it.

Let's imitate native signers

We Japanese are usually native Japanese speakers because we use Japanese as our first language.
Similarly, most Americans are native English speakers.

In the case of spoken language, we use this expression "native speaker," but in the case of sign language, we do not say "native speaker" because we do not speak the language aloud.
People who have been using sign language since childhood are called native signers.

As with other languages, imitating native speakers is the quickest and most accurate way to learn a language.
Therefore, if you want to learn sign language, the shortest way is to imitate native signers or communicate with native signers through trial and error.

Join the Deaf Community

If a child is born with severe hearing loss or deafness, there is no problem if the parents speak sign language.
In most cases, however, the parents can hear normally, but the child cannot.

In fact, nearly 90% of deaf children have parents who are normally hearing.
Hearing loss is a real possibility for everyone.

You can read more about the genetics of the disability in this article.

So a child with such hearing parents would not grow up in an environment where sign language is native.
In most cases, no one around them can sign.

Therefore, it is important to find a Deaf community as early as possible and create an environment where they can understand sign language.
Of course, parents can also learn sign language together there.
